Online quote for construction projects
First, when you request a quote, make sure to analyze the products and materials your merchant selects for you. Some merchants will make you a basic price with products and materials at cheaper/economic prices while others will make a budget with top quality products so higher global prices which is understandable.

How to compare two quotes?

Depending on your budget, it is up to you to check if the color, the model and the quality of the products and materials presented are for you. You can always replace some products, possibly with more economical options.

All these variables play a decisive role in the price of your project and that is why you can not look only at the overall price. This type of project (deck, shed, garagen, extension, cottage...) requires some analysis.

Construction projects

Here is an example showing why each item is important in a quote.

Let’s say you requested a DECK quote from two different merchants, making sure you have exactly the same dimensions, the same item quantities, and the same type of materials.
Here is a frequent error done with the type of materials:

Project A
Materials Quantity Price Total
Screws piles 50" 4 24$ 96$
Beam 2x8 2 22$ 44$
Joist 2x8 14 16$ 224$
Rimboard 2x8 3 22$ 66$
Decking 2x6 27 15$ 405$
Total     835$

Project B
Materials Quantity Price Total
Screws piles 50" 4 24$ 96$
Beam 2x8 2 22$ 44$
Joist 2x8 14 16$ 224$
Rimboard 2x8 3 22$ 66$
Decking 2x6 27 19$ 405$
Total     943$

Hardware store A offers you an economical 2x6 decking at $ 15 each. Hardware store B offers you a better, more expensive 2x6 decking for $ 19 each. This causes a difference between A (totaling 835$) and B (totaling 943$) of 108$. In this case, store B offers you a better quality product with a longer warranty. That's why you must compare item by item in order to make an informed decision that is not only based on the total price but on the quality of the complete project. And this principle applies to all projects.

Another example:  You build a garage and a dealer offers you an economical vinyl coating with a 10-year warranty at 0.55$ / ft2. Its competitor gives you a vinyl coating of superior quality, superior thickness and with a superior warranty at 0.95 $ / ft2. For a garage of 16' x 21' x 8 ' this will make 592 square feet.

For store A the price is $325.60 and for store B, $562.40. At this price you have a more shock resistant vinyl (for example: you won’t break it while operating the lawn mower). Also, the warranty is longer (for example:  against the fading to bad weather).
